Labor Support
for a Beautiful Birth

Would you benefit from a Labor Assistant or Doula?

Studies* have shown that women supported by a Labor Assistant during labor have:

50% reduction in the cesarean rate

25% shorter labor

60% reduction in epidural requests

40% reduction in oxytocin use

30% reduction in analgesia use

40% reduction in forceps delivery

Nancy Capo, certified childbirth instructor and labor assistant in Tucson, AZ., will assist at your birth and help you and your husband or partner achieve your birth plan goals.  A labor support Doula may be just what you need for the birth experience you desire.

"Nancy's presence at our son's birth was very reassuring.  She was able to stay objective and make suggestions that put our focus back on relaxation and how well labor was progressing.  She lifted our confidence with her encouraging insights and timely suggestions.  Nancy was a terrific instructor and coach!"

- Dara, mother of two

"I can't imagine the birth of my daughter without either one of you [husband and Nancy] there.  You were a great tag team for me!"

- Lynn, first-time mother

What does a Labor Assistant do?

We will meet before your birth and go over your birth plan together to clarify what you would like me to do at your baby's birth.  Some specific duties may include, but are not limited to:

Assist the father or coach as needed

Log contractions

Suggest ideas for mother's physical and emotional comfort

Help determine emotional signposts of labor

Take pictures or video

Provide labor massage

Help mom with comfortable and effective labor positions

Assist mom in getting started breastfeeding

Stay with mom after the birth if dad needs to chaperone baby to the nursury

Interface with hospital staff for mom and coach as needed

Encourage positive communications among the birthing team

Act as primary coach when or if no other trained coach is there

Limits:  Since I am not a doctor, nurse or midwife, I do not perform medical functions such as vaginal exams, blood pressure, fetal monitoring, or give medical advice.  I do attend home births, but only with proper medical or midwife supervision and back-up.

When should I call you to come?

You may call me at any time you think you are in labor.  As your assistant, I will meet you at the hospital when you are ready to settle in for labor there.  For home births, I will come when labor becomes active enough to require your attention and a midwife is present.

How long do you stay?

I stay until the birth is over, you have begun to breastfeed, and are comfortable.  This is generally an hour and a half, to two hours after the birth.

Do you charge extra for a long labor?

No.  You have no control over the length of your labor, and the thought of extra charges does not encourage relaxation, for either the mom or the dad!

What are your fees?

$495 per birth.  Pre-payment is required by the 35th week of pregnancy.  Services include a birth plan review appointment, and assistance at your baby's birth.

What areas do you serve?

I live in Tucson, AZ., and provide labor assistance at any of the metropolitan area hospitals or birth centers, as well as home births in all nearby communities.

Easier and Healthier Birth, by Klaus, Kennell, and Klaus (1993).

Why would I want a back-up labor assistant if my husband is being trained as my coach?

You will appreciate your husband’s undivided coaching and care.  Labor assistant jobs such as taking pictures, going for ice, logging contractions, etc., free your husband to support and be with you at all times.  Dads are better able to relax and focus on coaching knowing that a trusted, experienced professional is available for help or to answer questions.  Many women also benefit from extra hands available for massage, and  extra verbal encouragement.  A Labor Assistant may also catch things that even a well-prepared coach may forget, and help keep labor positive and on track.
