What does a Labor Assistant do? We will meet before your birth and go over your birth plan together to clarify what you would like me to do at your baby's birth. Some specific duties may include, but are not limited to:
Limits: Since I am not a doctor, nurse or midwife, I do not perform medical functions such as vaginal exams, blood pressure, fetal monitoring, or give medical advice. I do attend home births, but only with proper medical or midwife supervision and back-up. When should I call you to come? You may call me at any time you think you are in labor. As your assistant, I will meet you at the hospital when you are ready to settle in for labor there. For home births, I will come when labor becomes active enough to require your attention and a midwife is present. How long do you stay? I stay until the birth is over, you have begun to breastfeed, and are comfortable. This is generally an hour and a half, to two hours after the birth. Do you charge extra for a long labor? You will appreciate your husband’s undivided coaching and care. Labor assistant jobs such as taking pictures, going for ice, logging contractions, etc., free your husband to support and be with you at all times. Dads are better able to relax and focus on coaching knowing that a trusted, experienced professional is available for help or to answer questions. Many women also benefit from extra hands available for massage, and extra verbal encouragement. A Labor Assistant may also catch things that even a well-prepared coach may forget, and help keep labor positive and on track.
